About Gurukulam

“Trust Children” is a Non-Government Organisation providing free education to the economically poor children.

This effort to educate economically under-privileged children was started in 2004 with 34 children. Today, the school has grown to support 182 children. The school was started when I felt deeply moved by the plight of children living in the slums of Chennai. They had no chance of escape from poverty, no future except as manual laborers’ at best. I felt that we needed to reach out and give a chance to these children to break out of poverty. And what better way than education? Out of these thoughts evolved – “Trust Children”. A Public Charity Trust aimed at providing a holistic free education for economically poor children until they complete graduation or vocational training.

“Trust Children” and its school “Gurukulam” were founded with 34 children, 2 teachers and 2 staff. By 2007 with several loving hands joining in, we were able to build the first school building.

…the school has now grown to

  • 182 children
  • 15 Teachers and 6 Non-Teaching Staff
  • Free schooling in the English medium
  • Free uniforms
  • Free text books, note books
  • Free wholesome lunch
  • Free cereal in the morning
  • 1.5 acres of land registered under the Trust
  • 8 classrooms built so far

All the children practice Karate, Yoga and learn to Meditate so as to foster inner strength, which is required for the children to abide by the moral values taught in the school.

Tsunami 2004 : “Trust Children” also brought about immediate relief to thousands of villagers in 9 villages affected by the Tsunami and has extensively worked towards rehabilitation of Panayur, Pillumedu and Annamalaicherry villages.

Panayur Kuppam was officially adopted from the Govt of Tamilnadu, and was brought back to normalcy in a very short period of time. 34 fiberglass boats refurbished, over 60 catamarans rebuilt, an entire row of houses, a community centre and 41 toilets built and handed over.

Capt Nandkumar, Managing Trustee of Trust Children says,

“We need your support"

It would be wonderful if you could support us anyway you can. It would go a long way in breaking the poverty-manual labour cycle of the children here.

Our urgent needs, at the moment, are 1 classroom and 1 laboratory for the next academic year. We would be extremely grateful if you could help our children.

Looking forward to working together in helping under privileged children.”
